From Here to There to Here (Vectors)
Mathieu Léger (Moncton)
Artist Residency and Exhibition
May 20 to June 21, 2026
This project combines performance art and the visual trace of movement to manifest an archive of a place. This form of drawing is based on several performative elements: the displacement of the body, physiological complexities, and the creation of trajectories in space. The drawings are created from the displacement and movements of the body, becoming a sort of dataset that could be used to decipher origin and route: the translation of a vector followed by an individual.
The drawings are produced through various methods: the artist wears a backpack with a mechanism that translates body movements onto paper; the artist holds a pencil to the surface of the paper while walking between two predetermined points; the artist travels by car along a fixed itinerary. The artist attempts to remove the intentionality of the pencil stroke from the act of creation, aiming to become a kind of seismograph that records their wandering across the terrain.
